Description

REAL genuine antique United States Army Pattern 1860 Cavalry Sword "Saber"

SABER, (AKA "Sabre") = A heavy military sword with a long cutting edge & often, a curved blade. Most commonly a cavalry weapon

Produced in 1865 = the final year of the Bloody U.S. Civil War

Made by Christopher Roby (1814-1897), sword manufacturer & Commanding Officer of F Troop, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia (Pictured in image # 8)

Blade maker-marked "C. ROBY" above semi-circular (Type II) marking "W. CHELMSFORD MASS." As found marked on cavalry & artillery sabres

C. Roby maker's HISTORY SEEN HERE = https://tinyurl.com/2u2ysk96

Ricasso Reverse marked "U.S. 1865 & A.G.M." (arsenal inspector Alfred G. Manning)

The C. Roby US Civil War Cavalry sabre contracts

1861 = 410 purchased 1863 = 3,000 delivered 1864 = 14,000 " 1865 = 15,000 " 32,410 Total

Later in the Civil War large cavalry charges became less common & the cavalry took on the role of skirmishers

Many replaced their sabers with extra revolvers, or left swords in the saddle while fighting on foot with their repeating Henry rifles & Spencer carbines

This likely explains why the BLADE of this 159-YEAR-OLD sword is ALMOST MINT immaculate UNCLEANED-up condition with NO bends NO cracks NO nasty sharpening marks NO edge nicks NO rust NO pitting

The leather-wrapped hilt retains only trace vestiges of its original wire wrap but sits 100% FIRM & TIGHT on its blade without the least "rattle" from either the grip or its Brass half-basket guard

This is the sword the US cavalry use in Westerns, many being original antiques purchased by the movie industry in the 1920s when surplus Civil War equipment was cheap

On today's market, 90% of U.S. Civil War swords seen selling on the WWW are fakes, reproductions, or spurious offerings

This sword is GUARANTEED 100% GENUINE guarantee is GOOD "FOR LIFE" & includes a full purchase price refund INCLUDING postage costs BOTH WAYS

  • Rather clearly then thanks but NO thanks t***********0 (8)03:40 pm, Fri, 10 May 32+ years as a full-time licenced and registered antique dealer, 21 years making my full-time living on TradeMe. It's vaguely possible that I entirely FORGOT to photograph or mention a scabbard, WERE THERE ONE? but unlikely in the extreme. Especially given that I had maxed out the number of photos allowed, AND used every descriptive character of TM's idiotically restrictive LIMIT of characters. 21 years of idiot questions does tend to drain a seller's patience. phillipjames (8994) • Friday, 10 May 2024
