Description

Hariru Wikitoria- an illustrated history of the Maori tour of England 1863, card covered book of 128 pages, printed in 1985 and written by Brian Mackrell. I can’t really fault the book, no inscriptions and no faults that I can see, please see all m y pics. “”We looked at the roads of London, the ground could not be seen through the multitude of people….Dark , dark, dark, the ground could not be seen, wrote Reihana Te Taukawau when he and thirteen other Maoris arrived in England in May 1863. Their visit was the grandiose project of William Jenkins, a former Wesleyan lay preacher and interpreter. It took place as open conflict took place between the Colonial government and the Maoris broke out in N.Z.. The tour began with a dizzy rise to the heights of London society, culminating with an audience with Queen Victoria. Paratene Te Manu recorded the occasion. “ One by one we went forward to say Hariru to her after the pakeha fashion”…. I said be kind to us, be generous to the Maori people. Yes replied the Queen, I am kindly disposed towards the Maori race. But the tour from London to Bristol, Bath and Birmingham-quickly became the subject of bitter controversy. This story is largely told in the words of the visitors and the people they met, the book offers a rare insight into the encounter of Maori and European worlds in the 19th century.
