Description
Reluctant sale of this beautifully framed work printed in 1844 - over 180 years ago - a genuine early example of then "new" colour printing technology. Depicts "Rev J Waterhouse superintending landing of missionaries at Taranaki - though the artist/engraver had never been to NZ or met Maori hence the romantic costuming. Printed in Britain 1844, size 300mm x 413mm. Last discussion with art gallery several years ago said they would list at $4400. Have written earlier valuation $3500 (2007). Don't confuse with cheap reproductions printed in recent years. Have owned for over 30 years and am decluttering. See it then make an offer... Am close to changing my mind and keeping it...
