Description
This auction is for an antique English stoneware bottle of historical significance.
Stamped on the bottle is ‘W.G. Nixey, 12 Soho Square, London’.
WG Nixey was a manufacturer of black lead, and knife and stove polish at 12 Soho Square, London.
The plumbago used in manufacture was imported from Ceylon and the black lead from Austria, but all manufacturing took place at the company’s premises in Soho Square. The firm held a Royal Warrant for the sole manufacture of black lead to Queen Victoria.
W.G. Nixey became a limited company in 1911 and shortly thereafter it was taken over by another black lead manufacturer called Hargreaves Bros. & Co.
Glazed and non-porous.
Dimensions (approx.):
Height = 8.0 cm
Diameter = 5.0 cm
This stoneware bottle has been in my family for more than seventy years. Good condition for its age. Historical hairline crack down one side. Reserve price reduced accordingly.
We have moved house and, in order to downsize, I need to reduce the number of antique bottles and quality home décor items collected over many years. You might like to look at my other listings which include similar and / or related items.
Pick up is from Pakuranga, Auckland or postage by arrangement.
