Description
This is one of a collection of coins I am selling on behalf of a relative. None of these have been cleaned or graded. Save me as a seller. This is a 1794 Hastings Halfpenny Conder token from Great Britain. These tokens were issued by local merchants to address a severe shortage of official small change coinage during the late 18th century, a time when Britain was at war with France. Token Details Country/Region: United Kingdom / Sussex, Hastings Year: 1794 Composition: Copper Denomination: Halfpenny token Obverse (Side not pictured): Features a sloop sailing left with the legend "SUCCESS & SAFETY ATTEND THE ENDEAVOUR". Reverse (Pictured side): Displays the shield of arms of Hastings (variations of the Cinque Ports arms) between sprigs of palm and laurel, with the date 1794 below and the legend "HASTINGS HALFPENNY" around. Historical Context: In the 1790s, the official regal copper coinage had vanished from circulation due to the rising price of copper. To facilitate trade, individuals and companies issued their own tokens, which were redeemable for official currency at their premises
