My parents bought her from a Christchurch Antique store on Manchester street in the early 1980’s and paid a considerable sum for that time. We were told she was dated from about the 1880’s but have no formal proof of this. She is hand carved from marble and Alabaster. I’m thinking she is Italian or Greek by the signature on the back The signature is hard to read the letters. It looks like A E MoPtomole? The lucidity through her dress to see the form of her figure underneath is exquisite and that skill is applied in small detail like in the toenails which look almost real. She has a crack in her foot which must have been sealed a very long time a go as she was bought like this. Height 69cm Width 19cm at widest point.
