Louis XVI (Louis-Auguste; 1754 – 1793) was the last king of France before the fall of the monarchy during the French Revolution.

Louis became the new Dauphin of France upon the death of his father 1765.

In 1770, he married Marie Antoinette. He became King of France and Navarre on his paternal grandfather's death in 1774 and reigned until the abolition of the monarchy on 21 September 1792.

Louis' reign was marked by attempts to reform the French government but these were blocked by the French nobility and eventually led to revolution against the French aristocracy and the absolute monarchy led by Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette.

Louis was arrested during the Insurrection of 10 August 1792, one month later, the monarchy was abolished, then the French First Republic was proclaimed, Louis was tried by the National Convention, found guilty of high treason, and executed by guillotine on 21 January 1793.

The letter is addressed to infantry regiment colonel Jean Louis de Chambellay (a member of the "Montalais" an historic and very powerful French, noble family) and concerns the 'secret' appointment to the rank of Second Lieutenant of the 'de Nochefour" and requires a confirmation by reply.

The letter is approx 14-inches by 9.5-inches.

The letter remains in good condition despite its 250-year age :)
