This auction is for a fabulous vintage jewellery suite by the renowned New Zealand artist, Elsa Morrah.
The retro suite comprises a pendant necklace, pair of clip-on earrings and a ring. All feature a central panel of gold stone with a metal multi stem mount. The suite comes in the original leather pouch with which it was first exhibited and sold.
Elsa Kingston, nee Morrah, was born in Invercargill and died in Tauranga in 1989 at age nearly 90. She exhibited with many galleries including the NZ Academy of Fine Arts. The Artist files for Elsa Morrah are currently held by Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand.
Also included in the auction is the original invitation to the Exhibition Preview of Elsa Morrah’s spectacular Jewellery at the The Dowse Art Museum, Lower Hutt, New Zealand on 7 October1983.
The invitation of the Director of the Dowse Art Museum, James Mack, to Elsa Morrah’s official Preview reads: ‘…Elsa Kingston (nee Morrah) is an alchemist who takes base metals and fashions them with precious and semi precious stones into wonderous adornment.’
