Obverse (front): The Royal Cypher “GR VI” (for Georgius Rex VI) surmounted by the Crown of King George VI, surrounded by the words “THE ITALY STAR”. Reverse (back): Plain (no design or inscription). Suspension: Ring at the top for the ribbon (the original ribbon is missing in your photo). ??? Ribbon (original design) Colours: Red, white, green, white, red — representing the colours of the Italian national flag. Red = Army White = Air Force Green = Navy These symbolise the joint operations of all three services in the Italian Campaign. ?? Eligibility Awarded to members of the British Commonwealth forces who served: In operations in Sicily or Italy between 11 June 1943 and 8 May 1945; or In other nearby Mediterranean areas directly connected with the campaign (e.g., Greece, Yugoslavia, Aegean Islands). New Zealand, Australian, British, Indian, and South African forces were among the key participants.
