Description
An extremely rare Boer War commemorative jug made by Peter Hutson & Co in 1900.
NEAR OFFERS CONSIDERED Free shipping on buy now only
Measuring an impressive 21cm in height, this stunning jug has the most beautiful green and blue majolica glaze with relief decoration of a soldier with a bandolier and rifle standing to attention, crossed flags and the words "Whawhai Mo To Kanga Mo To Kuini Ake Ake Ake" (Fight for your Queen Forever). The handle is modelled as a cannon (note the very tip of the handle is missing, but easily restored). Impressed with the potter's monogram and Rd 123.
The last one I found that sold was the same jug with restoration to the spout and top rim and with small nicks. It sold for $9000.00 NZD.
this jug does have crazing, evident on the inside and base. The spout has also been restored. Otherwise in pretty fine fettle for it's age.
According to nzhistory.net.nz, there are only eight examples known to exist.
the jug commemorates the first five NZ contingents and their commanders. Major Robin, Major Craddock, Major Jowsey, Major Somerville and Lieut.Col Newall.
