The Cleonisceras ammonites once thrived in the ancient seas that now form the Mahajanga and Tulear regions of Madagascar. They can be found in Cretaceous deposits deposited about 120 million years ago. They became extinct along with the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous. These ammonites are renowned for their iridescent pearly shells and intricate pattern of suture lines. When sectioned they reveal an elaborate pattern of septae forming an Archimedean spiral. Replaced incredibly slowly by mineral solutions that now form calcite crystals. Some sections may also be infilled by grey sediments. They are an amazing sight and have the benefit of looking truly decorous. Certainly a conversation piece.

This specimen has been further carved to give the appearance of a chameleon like creature climbing over the exposed shell. Features a beautifully exposed umbilicus and an extensive pattern of suture lines. The edge of the shell is translucent, allowing a warm light to pass through. The carver has used part of the shell to form a narrow base. This piece does self-stand. but I have also provided an adjustable perspex stand to provide greater stability.

This is a super ammonite specimen in its own right but its ornamental value is also great.
