Description
Fossil crocodile tooth - 29mm / 1.1" Late Cretaceous period (Cenomanian), 100 - 94 million years ago Kem Kem Group Morocco
I am not 100% on the ID of this tooth but Elosuchus cherifiensis is likely. This is an absolutely stunning specimen, the enamel is in excellent condition, the tip shows no feeding wear and the tooth has no repairs or restoration. Condition wise, they don't much better than this! Elocuchus is an extinct genus of Crocodyliform, a genus that existed millions of years before true crocodiles evolved. This is a very rare tooth to come up for sale in NZ! The head of Elocuchus would have looked similar to the modern day gharial - a long, fairly thin snout. Thought to be a fully aquatic animal, Elocuchus was most likely an apex predator and had a maximum length reaching over 7m.
