Description
Size: 26 × 14 × 5 cm Material: Natural soapstone, thin-profile carving Condition: Excellent vintage condition, no repairs
This is a beautifully executed one-of-a-kind soapstone landscape from the early 1900s, featuring a traditional Chinese mountain village with pavilions, bridges and pine trees.
What makes this piece truly special is its extremely thin profile (only 5 cm deep). Thin soapstone is very difficult to carve because the material becomes fragile — only skilled craftsmen were able to create deep layers, roofs, trunks and miniature details without breaking the stone.
? Thin-profile soapstone carvings are rare and were traditionally made for scholars’ desks (scholar art). ? Every stone has a unique formation, so no two pieces can ever be the same. ? This piece displays warm honey tones and natural veining, with a solid dark stone base.
