The Fulton Medal is an annual prize awarded by the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors (now Survey and Spatial New Zealand), established from a bequest by James Edward Fulton (1854–1928), a prominent surveyor and civil engineer. It recognizes the best paper or contribution by a member of the Institute.
- Form: The medal is struck in bronze (50mm), inscribed with the recipient’s name and year. It was produced by Mayer & Kean Ltd of Wellington.
- This medal was awarded to Professor J B Mackie in 1958. Professor J. B. Mackie (John Bullamore Mackie, 1910–2012) was a distinguished New Zealand academic, surveyor, and mining engineer who became one of the most influential figures in the University of Otago’s School of Mines and Department of Surveying.
Early Life & Education: Mackie studied mining at the University of Otago in the 1930s, where he became known for his lively personality and dedication to engineering and surveying.
