Ernest Lester Jonas (1870-1952) was an amateur photographer & was the 3rd son of Charles Adlphus Henry Jonas, an Auckland Photographer (1825-1907). The above Stereocard was part of the Jonas family collection. The National Library & Auckland Art Gallery have only 12 examples in their Collections. The Collection includes Rare examples from Ponsonby, Mercer & Ngaruawahia Regattas. Rare if not Unique examples...

New Zealand Stereoscope Cards became popular from around the 1890's when photography became in reach of non professional Photographers. The Stereoscope itself became a household item form 1861 when the Holmes Viewer was invented. In New Zealand most Sterescope Cards where handmade by the photographer by placing 2 identical photo's onto a stiff card. In most cases they were unique & done for personal use or use of local groups. Today they are a Rare record of life around 1900 in New Zealand.
