Description
Background / Provenance:
Cast-metal souvenir ashtrays and trinket dishes featuring historical or medieval scenes were widely produced from the 1950s through the 1970s. They were commonly made in Europe using sand-casting techniques and sold in gift shops, pubs or tourist areas. This example depicts a medieval figure holding a jug or tankard, with a barrel and stone arch behind him, suggesting a tavern scene.
