Hi, here is a small watercolour by the New Zealand artist Frances Hodgkins. It is signed and dated 1914 and shows a coastal scene in the French village of Equihen where Hodgkins spent several weeks in the middle of 1914 conducting art classes. The image itself measures 24.5cm x 16cm and the frame is 41cm x 31cm. Condition is not great and it would benefit from some restoration and re-framing. Frances Hodgkins was a prolific artist who constantly experimented with mediums and changed stylistically throughout her career. She left her home in Dunedin for England in 1901 and apart from two trips back to New Zealand remained based in Britain until her death in 1947. Included in the images for this auction are excerpts of letters written by Hodgkins from her time in Equihen and a painting of the town by the local French artist Jean-Charles Cazin. There is also a photographic image of Equihen from a contemporary postcard. This painting was bought at auction through the auction site The Saleroom UK in November of 2016 and was previously an unknown work of the artist of which there are many.
