Overview of the exhibition In Between – Finding light in the Shadows
Our milestones definitive in their significance and importance are knots on our life’s thread – by their marks they define the routine of everyday life that falls in between. Contained within the notched intervals are most of our lives. Rendering this habitual space as – mundane – insignificant – unremembered - erased. What of the connections, gestures and impressions held in the spaces in between? Overshadowed by importance, exploring these areas, their relationship aspires to reveal their place and meaning.
Elle Freestone’s painting is embedded on the transient nature of process, materials and techniques. She investigates her ideas through labour intensive activities that are designed to reveal, expose and emphasis buried visual information. To this end one might say the works are reductive or use a subtractive mode of revealing, however this over-simplifies what is an intense process – physically and intellectually. Decisions about the layering of colour, composition elements and formal properties such as contrast, balance and forms are all considered. Using an established technique of layering several coats of paint, applying shapes and forms within these layers, then sanding back to see what emerges, may seem somewhat random. However in Elle’s painting methodology, she is constantly assessing what is before her. What to remain and what to go.
