Description
A vintage reproduction of the 1928 portrait titled "Little Girl in Pink Dress" by the renowned and tragic artist Chaim Soutine(1893-1943). I would date this item to the 1960s or thereabouts. Interestingly, on the back is a stamp "Made in Finland".
Chaim Soutine was of Belarusian-Jewish origin. In 1913 he moved to Paris where he was to live and work. He became particularly good friends with Amadeo Modigliani, who painted many portraits of him. In 1923 American Albert C Barnes, who's renowned art collection which includes Picasso, Cezanne, Renoir and Matisse, bought 60 of Soutine's paintings; which prompted the artist to immediately order a taxi for Nice, a journey of 800km or so. However, with WWII and the invasion of France, Soutine being Jewish, was forced into hiding to avoid the Gestapo, often sleeping outdoors. With worsening health and for a time surviving on porridge, he was to die of a perforated ulcer in Aug 1943.
Soutine's paintings have fetched large amounts in the 21st Century, with his record being US28 million at Christie's in 2015.
Soutine painted many child portraits, always applying his uniquely intense expressionist style, or as he called it "Expression is in the touch" - a reference to the rhythm and the passion.
The picture's frame measures 33cm by 51cm and it's ready to hang. Over time, the surface has incurred some minor scratching, but they are only discernible from certain angles.
