English Oak Wainscot Armchair, Charles I, circa 1640 (English civil war period). Rare and finely carved joined oak wainscot armchair, dated by Sotheby’s specialists to circa 1640 and likely made in West England and very heavy. Classic Charles I provincial form with bold architectural presence. * Tall panelled back with crisp central lozenge carving of a stylized rosette in guilloche border * Nullated stiles and lunette-carved crest rail * Downswept arms on straight supports * Deep plank seat, wavy front rail, bold box stretcher * Rich, warm patina; sturdy and an original survivor from the English civil war period. Provenance: Private collection; examined and dated by Sotheby’s. A handsome, imposing, and highly collectible example in remarkable condition. Comparable chairs are now rare at auction and strongly sought after. Dimensions: 47 in (119 cm) high × 24 in (61 cm) wide × 22 in (56 cm) deep Sotheby’s estimate 1500-2500 GBP at auction. Will provide email documentation to new owner on request. Condition: very original with an historic Victorian period small steel bracket support repair (arm to frame) Small spliced repair to rear leg? and seat may have been replaced in the 18th century according to Sotheby’s. Also small loss to right side of pediment decoration under seat rail if look very closely but all add a lot of character and authenticity overall and as Sotheby’s say doesn’t detract, only adds to the history of the chair.
