"REGARDLESS of how much is written on the subject, the amateur big game hunter will have to learn by actual experience in the field. When he first takes the field, in spite of expectations he will very rarely see game in the open in true picture-book style.
Except in early morning and late evening, game is seldom out in the open unless traveling, and even then, if much hunted, it will remain in the edge of any cover available. Goats, sheep and antelope are the exceptions, and the latter especially stay out in the open and depend on their eyesight to keep them out of danger. While sheep and goats do the same, to some extent, they will also bed where they can be well hidden, if they have been hunted, while the antelope, in such a case, prefers plenty of open terrain on all sides.
One must learn what to look for and then where to look as well. In early morning, the game is apt to be feeding and one can well look for movement, while later in the day it will be bedded and one must then look over all likely bed grounds. Again in the late evening game will feed and one can watch for movement on all likely feed. Knowing what the animal is feeding on is of utmost importance and will save a great deal of hunting and searching; it is really the key to locating game."
