Description
The Dream by John Masefield
Published in London by William Heinemann in 1922. This is a limited signed first edition, signed by John Masefield and his daughter the illustrator Judith Masefield. This copy is still in the presented in the scarce glassine wrap (damaged as per below description).
What is really unique about this book is the letters enclosed. This book was purchased by renown NZ author Pat Lawlor in October 1940 from rare book seller Frank Hollings in London. Enclosed is a letter from Hollings to Lawlor apologizing for the delay in dealing with the order, which was due to his bookshop being hit and partially destroyed by German bombs on 8/9 September 1940. There is a handwritten note on the letter from Hollings explaining that one of the volumes saved was this "The Dream" and it reads like the water damage and damage to the upper portion of wrapper is from the incendiary bombs!
Hardback, no DJ as printed, book still in the glassine wrapper (damaged). There is some water damage to the front boards (from German bombing in WW2!), some minor foxing to pages, and pencil markings from Pat Lawlor on first page, generally very clean pages considering its history. I can provide more photos on request.
