Description

A rare opportunity for collectors: A scarce 1887 First Edition of Man Overboard featuring what might be the most "honestly" inscribed author note you’ll ever find.

This isn't just a first edition; it’s a presentation copy from Surgeon Major Samuel Thomas Heard (1835–1921) to his niece. The inscription is pure Victorian wit:

“Frida Roberts from her uncle ‘Poor old Heard’ June 1892. Only your uncle by marriage you nasty child” This incredible provenance adds a layer of personal history and humour that is rarely seen in books of this age.

?? Key Details: Publisher: London: F.V. White & Co., 1887 (True First Edition) Binding: Original green cloth, solid and shelf-ready. Rarity: Includes the original Errata slip (frequently missing in other copies). Provenance: Samuel Thomas Heard was a noted medical officer and the creator of the famous Rossdohan Gardens in Ireland.

? Condition Report: Internal: Very clean; light age spotting as expected for a 130+ year old volume. External: Binding is firm. Minor wear to the spine head (please refer to high-res photos). Overall: A well-preserved, "Very Good" example of Victorian publishing.

?? Investment Value: Inscribed copies of this rarity fluctuate between $900–$1,100+ internationally. Given the unique, humorous nature of this specific inscription and the inclusion of the errata slip, this is a premium acquisition for any serious library. Buy Now: $1,250 (Open to reasonable offers — don't let this unique piece of history slip away )
