William Yate:
An Account of New Zealand and of the Formation and Progress of the Church Missionary Society's Mission in the Northern Island.
Published by Seeley and Burnside, London 1835, second edition (same year as the first edition)
Hardcover, 200 pages, with a frontispiece, a map of the North Island and top of the South Island, and 9 other plates. The plate with the 1835 flag of the United Tribes is coloured.
Condition is good, tape repairs (not cellotape) on 4 pages, 2 old names on front endpaper. A complete copy, binding is firm
The plates show: Rev, Samuel Marsden, Waimate mission station, a chief weeping over a friend's haed, a stage erected for a New Zealand feast (hakari), Kerikeri, the mission boat accompanying a Maori war party (taua), etc.
The Rev. Yate spent seven years in New Zealand before returning to NSW and being dismissed from the mission for misconduct. This work provides an account of the geography, flora and fauna, the social structure of the Maori, and a history of the mission.
