Description

Here we have a slightly unusual system, namely a Sun Blade 150. From my testing it seems to be in good working order, and it's very clean too. Based on Sun's SPARC processor, these can either run Sun's Solaris UNIX, GNU/Linux, or any of the various flavours of BSD. Probably other OSes too. I've chosen to install OpenBSD here since it's exceptionally easy to set up. This particular unit has the 650MHz UltraSPARC IIe CPU, two 512MB sticks of ECC PC133 SDRAM, a working DVD-ROM optical drive and an 80GB 7200rpm hard drive. The hard drive claims to have less than 300 hours on it, but the whole machine looks to have had more use than that. I haven't tested the floppy drive or the card reader.

When I got it there was a note saying "speaker faulty on main PCB, no secondary speaker, main audio circuit suspect." I don't know why this would have been because the onboard beeper works, as does the line output. When booting there is also a warning saying "IDPROM contents invalid. Power On Self Test Failed. Cause = NVRAM U13." Despite the fact that the MAC address isn't simply blank, it would seem that this is the usual dead NVRAM battery problem that these old Suns have. I'm working on fixing this and will update the listing once I've done so.

Normally, to access the Openboot firmware you have to hit a key combination with keys that only exist on the official Sun keyboard. Naturally this presents difficulties when you only have a standard USB keyboard. However, I have turned off autoboot in the firmware so that when the system boots you'll be dumped into Openboot by default. Getting to the OS from there is a simple matter of typing "boot disk".

Pickup is in Woolston.
