It is a small, dome shaped machine and the sound is actually made by a tiny fan motor within. It has two speeds. You get a bit of volume control by rotating the lid to expose more holes, or fewer holes as desired. The sound actually is quite good at masking. It is not strictly 'white noise' since there is more output at the lower frequencies. Still works as original.
