Description
Botanical name: Metrosideros excelsa
A magnificent New Zealand native evergreen tree with crimson flowers. So, the nickname "New Zealand Christmas tree". It has olive-green oval-shaped leaves & distinctive fluffy tubular bright red flowers that attract birds & insects.
The tree is highly resilient. Aerial roots can form from branches & grow down to the ground. The tree can grow up to 20m tall with a crown that can spread up to 35m wide. It thrives in sandy or rocky terrain.
The tree plays a significant role in Maori tradition. A famous Pohutukawa at Cape Reinga is considered the departure point for spirits returning to their ancestral homeland. The wood is dense, strong & durable. In traditional Maori medicine (Rongoa), the inner bark & the nectar from the flowers are used for various ailments. The strong root systems are used for erosion control, especially along coastlines

- Germinates in 7-14 days.
HINT: Sow thinly 3 to 4 cm apart into a tray filled with lightly dampened seed raising mix. Cover lightly with pumice sand or vermiculite. Cover with newspaper & keep out of light for a week. Keep moist during the germination period, 14 to 28 days. When seedlings emerge, prick them into separate containers. Slowly introduce stronger light. Pot into larger containers as the plants grow for two years before planting them into ground.
