Brief description Aromatic evergreen shrub/small tree with glossy leaves used as bay leaves in cooking; also excellent clipped as a hedge or topiary.
Uses Culinary bay leaves (fresh or dried) Hedge/screen/topiary and container plant
Growing conditions Full sun to part shade, well-drained soil, and a sheltered position. Generally hardy to about -5°C, and tougher in sheltered spots/in-ground.
Germination (assuming basics) If seed has dried / bought seed: soak 24 hours in warm water, then sow. For best results, give a cold-moist pre-chill (~8 weeks at 1–5°C) in a barely damp medium, then sow warm/bright. Bay has deep dormancy.
