A large traditional Matau pendant, hand carved in New Zealand by local artist Don Campbell. This Matau incorporates part of the deer antler crown from which it was carved along the side giving it a very unique and organic style

It is carved from natural (unbleached) deer antler so retains all the unique colours and textures of this amazing material. It also includes an adjustable hand plaited braid cord and is supplied in a traditional woven presentation bag. The the standard cord is natural/tan but it can be supplied with a black cord instead on request. Just message me when you place your order.

This is a fully rounded thick 3D sculptural form, rather than the common flat form of modern Matau.

The Matau is one of the most powerful symbols used in Maori culture as it represents prosperity, abundance and fertility. It also is said to provide good luck and safety when traveling over water. The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life.

As every piece of antler has vastly different tones and textures, this is a one of a kind piece so it will be removed from the gallery permanently when sold.

The large male deer or "stags" naturally drop their antlers at the end of the mating season every year and grow a new set the following year. The material used for this carving is from these fallen antlers which means no animal has been harmed to obtain the materials for this carving.
