Description
Block Size...15cm x 15cm x 3cm More than 50 years ago in India, the 'Daisy Flower' vintage printing block was used in the fabric print-making process. Block Printing in India is widely known as “Woodblock Printing”, “Woodcut Printing” or “Hand block Printing”. This printing technique dates back hundreds of years.
The block printing art was done by following a process whereby the unique designs were hand carved into the wooden blocks. Natural dyes were then used for stamp printing on fabrics, usually cotton which absorbs the dye rapidly.
Each wooden block has a unique design or pattern. It is very rare to find a matching pair. A large wooden handle is found on the back of the wooden block to ensure ease with stamping, it is attached with nails. The block is about 3 to 4 centimeters thick which ensured it could be used repeatedly with little or no damage to the design on front.
Depending on the fashion of the period, or festive event of each region, certain designs and patterns became more popular with designers, printers and consumers. Researching vintage and antique Indian printed fabric or paintings will show these.
Vintage blocks can be resurrected and used once more with success. Teaching print making or using it yourself to create one-of-a-kind pieces of print art are totally doable. And of course the more blocks you collect, the more incredible your designs will be. Enjoy !
