The story centers on Ted Stroehmann (played by Ben Stiller), a socially awkward guy who still pines for his high school crush, Mary Jensen (Cameron Diaz). After a prom night disaster years earlier, Ted hires a shady private investigator (Pat Healy, played by Matt Dillon) to track her down. But when Healy meets Mary, he falls for her too-and lies to Ted about her life to keep her for himself. Chaos (and hilarity) ensues as more suitors emerge, each with their own wild approach to win her over.
