Description
Dwarf Chain Loach (Ambastaia sidthimunki)
The Dwarf Chain Loach is a highly sought-after freshwater species prized for its striking chain-like pattern and active, playful behaviour. Native to Southeast Asia, this small loach is well known for its intelligence and social nature, making it an excellent addition to peaceful community aquariums.
Unlike many larger loach species, Dwarf Chain Loaches remain compact, allowing them to be kept in medium-sized aquariums when housed in proper groups. They are schooling fish and should always be kept in groups of at least five or more to display natural behaviour and reduce stress. When kept correctly, they are constantly on the move, exploring the tank and interacting with both their environment and tankmates.
Dwarf Chain Loaches prefer aquariums with soft substrates such as sand or fine gravel, along with driftwood, smooth rocks, and shaded areas for shelter. Dense planting and hiding places are essential, as they enjoy darting in and out of cover. They are excellent scavengers and are well known for controlling pest snail populations naturally, helping keep your aquarium clean.
Feeding and Diet
Dwarf Chain Loaches are omnivorous and require a varied diet. They readily accept high-quality sinking pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. While they will eat snails, this should not be their sole food source. A balanced diet ensures good health and vibrant coloration.
