When the horse accepts the bit, it creates a soft line between the tongue and jaw. The stronger bit leverage only comes into play when the horse resists the rider's rein pressure, engaging the locking action of the mouthpiece. The moment the horse relaxes and accepts the contact, the bit returns to its soft state, thus encouraging self-correction in the young horse and also as a very useful tool for the sensitive, yet more advanced competition horses.
