Lake locked Salmon Fishing Guide

Lake-locked salmon are found in at least twenty lakes throughout the South Island. The fish are typically from 0.5 to 1kg in size but can reach up to 2.5kg in good years. They are top eating and fun to catch on light spin and trolling gear and can also be taken at night on fly-fishing gear using luminous flies. Top techniques, locations and seasons for catching lake -locked trout are provided. Lake locked salmon make up 30% of the catch in the larger southern lakes such as Wakatipu, Wanaka and Hawea and can at times be taken in large numbers. There are many all year round lake locked salmon fisheries that are ideally suited to boat fishing.
