Description

Six paper labels for Oak canned / bottled food products, probably from about the 1930s judging by the style. Includes:

  • Tomato Sauce
  • Spaghetti in Tomato Sauce with cheese
  • Oak Leaf Tomato Puree
  • Blackberry & Apple Jam
  • Cape Gooseberry & Melon Jam
  • Melon & Lemon Jam

A search of Paperspast shows that 'Oak' first appeared as a brand in NZ in 1908. Auckland, Wellington & Motueka were listed as branches in the 1920s although Motueka seemed to have been dropped by 1932 with just Auckland remaining. In 1947 the company applied for a license for canning in Napier.

The labels have various faults, tears, stains, bits off etc. - please see photos, they're sold 'as is'. This auction is for six labels. As usual with these most ephemeral of items, the survival rate is not likely to be great.
