Description
Welcome to Divaria fine vintage jewellery. We believe that all beautiful handmade and heirloom pieces need to be preserved and loved.
A stunning sterling silver and greenstone hand carved teaspoon sourced from Arrowtown on a recent buying trip. The sterling silver spoon has assay marks for Birmingham and the makers mark for Hoseph Swindell who was a watch maker and jeweller in Christchurch from 1880-1905. I have included pictures of the reference text for the makers mark, a fine example from Te Papa of his work as well a picture of where he worked for G Coates and Co before starting his own business.
After emigrating to New Zealand sometime between 1861 and 1866, reportedly to work on the Jubilee Clock Tower, he worked for G. Coates and Co., Watchmakers and Jewellers, before setting up his own business, J. Swindell & Son 1880-1905.
The green stone is hand-carved with a tiki. Most of his pieces were of plain greenstone. This is so charming and rare, I have two of these are are including pictures of both. The auction is for ONE ONLY, if you wish to purchase please let me know.
Will be sent by fully insured signed courier anywhere in New Zealand for free.
