Description
An exceptional Dean Buchanan work - a huge oil work stretched on jute/hessian.
Amongst the most intricate and detailed Buchanan works I have seen, central to the work is James Cook’s Endeavour, surrounded by New Zealand native bush, including the Nikau fern - with Mercury Bay in the background.
Another spectacular work from Dean, that demonstrates his personal personal admiration and intertwinement with New Zealand, our Landscape, and our History. It further demonstrates his genuine love for “the elements of painting: pictorial rhythm, colour, figurative and abstract forms, and one of the forever great subjects of art - nature herself”.
Te-Whanganui-o-Hei, or “The Great Bay of Hei” on the Coromandel Peninsula gained its English title, Mercury Bay, in November 1769. It was named by pioneering explorer James Cook, who landed there to observe the transit of Mercury.
I believe this is destined to be a historically important work, already an impressive painting by one of New Zealand's art greats - and an intrinsically valuable, visually exceptional piece of Kiwiana.
This massive work measures in at: 1230h x 1800w, making it a fantastic feature piece.
“If you stopped me from painting, I’d probably die. It’s become that important to me. I want to fill the world with colourful images before I die.”
Buyer must pick up due to the size and nature of the work.
Pickup is in Eden Terrace. Please feel free to ask any questions, Thanks!
I'm unavailable between 24th December & 15th January.
