SS Gothic Souvenir Sailor Doll (1930s–1960s)
These charming sailor dolls were popular souvenirs sold aboard ocean liners and cruise ships from the 1930s through the 1960s. Typically, the name of the ship is stitched or printed on the doll's hat, linking each one to a specific vessel.
The two primary manufacturers were Norah Wellings and the Empire Co, both known for their distinctive craftsmanship. Dolls from both makers feature cloth or composite faces with hand-painted details and soft bodies.
Norah Wellings dolls often have a fabric tag stitched to the sole of the foot, reading “Made in England by Norah Wellings.” Due to age and wear, this tag is sometimes missing.
Empire dolls can be identified by a cloth ‘Empire’ label sewn under the collar at the back of the doll's neck.
Collectors prize these dolls for their nostalgic charm and historical connection to the golden age of ocean travel.
Although this doll lacks an identifying label or tag, its charm remains undiminished.
