Description
(Donated to the recent jumble sale at my local Anglican church. I am now selling this and some rare books here on TM to benefit the church's earthquake-strengthening fund.)
Copy of this Auckland newspaper-magazine dated May 5 1937. It's a Special Souvenir Issue in honour of the present Queen's father taking the throne. A hard-to-find memento these days!
In pretty good condition for a newspaper that's 81 years old. It's been stored flat so there's no fold along the middle. The pink cover is no longer attached and it's tattered around the edges and along the spine. But the staples are still holding the pages all together (except for a two page spread in the very middle, as pictured).
The included commemorative "Coronation Supplement" is on shiny white paper instead of newsprint. It contains many beautiful black & white photos of the new monarchs throughout their lives. There are also lovely pictures of then-Princess Elizabeth and the late Princess Margaret, some of them formal portraits and some more relaxed snaps.
The rest of the newspaper provides a snapshot of life in New Zealand during the late 1930s, under the first Labour government led by Michael Joseph Savage. There are also glimpses of trouble brewing in Europe, such as reports from the Spanish Civil War and from Nazi Germany.
Pick up from Eastbourne, or in the Lower Hutt CBD by arrangement. The quoted courier prices are for sending this newspaper flat, bubblewrapped, and between sheets of cardboard. If you're willing to let me fold it, postage will be much cheaper!
