Description
An original 1927 flag on the original stick, part of which is broken off – but only to be expected for something so fragile and 92 years old!
It commemorates the royal visit of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and parents of Queen Elizabeth II.
The flag, 30mm wide by 17.5cm deep, is slightly faded and stained after general wear over the years. There is a small tear to the bottom corner.
It has a 14x9cm Union Jack as part of the Australian flag in the top left corner, with WELCOME in capital 3cm high in the right corner.
The 7mm diameter dowel stick handle is 27.5cm long to the point where it is broken.
The royal couple arrived in Auckland by boat. After unveiling a First World War memorial to the Arawas in Rotorua, they visited many North Island towns before arriving in Wellington.
In Nelson the Duchess was taken ill with tonsillitis and forced to abandon the trip. The Duke continued alone by road and rail to the West Coast, Christchurch, Dunedin, Invercargill and Bluff.
We are having a well overdue clean-out.
