Description
An original watercolour painting from 1988 by NZ artist John Coley (b1935). The scene is of a homestead near Okains Bay, Banks Peninsula painted from a perspective of height.
John William Coley, was born in Palmerston North and attended ChCh School of Art Canterbury University in the mid/late 1950s in the company of Quentin MacFarlane. Subsequently following a stint teaching art including at the ChCh Teacher's College he became the Director of the Robert MacDougall Art Gallery, ChCh from 1980 until 1996. He was also awarded an MBE in 1988 for his services to art.
John Coley was an active exhibitor with the Canty Soc of Arts and significantly with 'The Group', including their last exhibition of 1977 alongside McCahon, Hotere, Olivia Spencer-Bower and Doris Lusk to name a few.
John Coley's works and/or files can be found at the ChCh Art Gallery, Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Auckland Art Gallery, Hocken Collection, Te Papa and so on.
Coley's art sells well at auctions in NZ and abroad. Of Coley's landscapes, this would be amongst his largest and most impressive examples.
The visible watercolour measures 56cm by 42cm, the frame 81cm by 68cm and it is protected behind glass and ready to hang. Condition of the whole artwork is good.
