Description
Garth Tapper (1927-1999) is known for his dark and captivating portrayals of the everyday.
While best recognised for his bar scenes, judge portraits (and combinations thereof) here we see Tapper still in his element with ‘The Wrestlers’. The subject is less typical - the work is instantly recognisable as a Garth Tapper through the wonderfully textural brushstrokes and deep colour palette.
The elegant portrayal of figure and movement is natural for Tapper, who was in his element teaching life-drawing.
An excellent scene, evocative of tense action.
Tapper taught at Elam alongside Colin McCahon, Greer Twiss, and Robert Ellis. Tapper’s students over his teaching career included the likes of Ian Scott and Nigel Brown. The late Tapper continues to be revered by fellow artists, but is under-represented in New Zealand art literature, especially considering the impact he has had on fellow artist’s.
