William Mathew Hodgkins South Island Watercolour

The following auction is for a superb watercolour by renowned artist, William Mathew Hodgkins. Most people would know of the name Hodgkins as a result of Frances Hodgkins who was the daughter of William Mathew Hodgkins. W M Hodgkins is an extremely well respected artist who specialized in the landscape tradition in the 19th century. He followed after artists such as Peter de Wint, J M W Turner, et cetera and was well known on the Otago art circuit as a teacher of landscape technique. Romantic Landscape artists from what was still considered home to early New Zealand immigrants.

This particular watercolour is signed to the bottom right hand corner and features a view of a prospector alongside a river on the South Island. The painting is from a Californian estate and has been repatriated by ourselves to New Zealand. The painting is new to the New Zealand market, give or take a hundred years. You would looking at a fair bit more than this price to purchase the painting at a local auction.
