John Haley was born in Liverpool in 1888 and he and his wife emigrated to NZ in 1919.

Haley exhibited with Dealer galleries in Auckland and was an exhibiting and working member of the Auckland Society of Arts between 1921 and 1927. In 1936 Haley exhibited an oil painting titled "Castor Bay" at the Seddon Galleries in Melbourne.

Two of his watercolours hang in the collection of the Auckland Art Gallery.

With many overseas and Australasian sales John Haley's paintings are consistent sellers. The highest auction price US$1700 for a watercolour 13.75in by 18.75in.

This painting, given the English cottage subject and the phone number of Fisher and Sons, ChCh being "Phone 215" dates the work to be early 20th century.
