Ray Mount Rogers' first novel, set in Hawke's Bay in the early 1900s, is a story about steeplechase horse racing, inspired by the author's grandfather's tales of early NZ settlers.

Condition Dust jacket: Intact, showing minor general wear and tear only. Unfortunately, the 'white cloud' motif along the spine is discoloured as a result of foxing (browning) along the spine on the flip side of the jacket. The front and rear inside flaps have discoloured around the edges. The rear of the dust jacket, coloured white, shows up the surface wear more than on the front. Hardcover: Very minor bumping only. End-papers are Ex/ Ex. Pages: Apart from some minor creasing or denting here and there, the pages are in good repair and clean with no marks.

A romance of the early settlers who shaped the history of New Zealand.

Condition The main issue with this volume is the jacket which shows extensive exposure to water on rear (see scan). However the jacket is fully intact, although the corners do reveal the effects of wear. The front inside flap is not price clipped, but the rear inside flap shows very light discolouration along top and bottom edges. Flip side of jacket shows browning along spine, and the effects of exposure to water are visible also. The hardcover is in fine repair, although some expected bumping is seen at top of spine. A certain unevenness of surface colour can be detected in the light. Page edges top and side show foxing (yellow spots), but otherwise the pages are very clean and in excellent repair, although the (blank) second and second to last pages show large areas of rectangular browning. The end-papers rear show two small dark marks along top which look like glue residue from printing.
