YOU & CUE- BOOK.

The book's photos span all the decades so there's lots of funky stuff from the 60s and 70s as well. Australia may have been disadvantaged fashion-wise by geography in the pre-internet days but Cue's book proves that there was no shortage of stylish women about. While the book is essentially a big ad for Cue, I like its approach. It's not full of the company's favourite photos of its product but their consumer's favourite photos of themselves in its clothes. The open source model makes it an interesting exercise in collaborative social history and a fascinating snapshot of mainstream Australian fashion.

There are many beautifully produced compendia of air-brushed high fashion shots but very few books devoted to what women wear daily. And even fewer of those have been authored by the women themselves. You & Cue is a promotional vehicle but also a potted history of our changing mores and expectations. One can trace the trajectory of Australian women's changing social identities in the elision of the mini-skirted sexual revolutionaries of the late 60s into the hippie chic of the 70s; the look-at-me eclecticism of 80s post-punk poppet’s into the sanguine-red power-suited confidence of the 90s; and finally the emergence of our current deep conservatism where sky-high heels are the sole standout feature of the otherwise stylistically restrained naughtiest.
