Description
A wonderful history of colonial New Zealand, with the stories of 242 women including over 100 historic photos. Even includes some of their early recipes and remedies in the back.
Here is a description from the front: The men who first settled in the back country of 19th century New Zealand went out into the wilderness because they wanted to. But their wives and daughters had no option but to go with their men, and it is of these women that Miriam Macgregor has written.
She has compiled personal studies of 54 women of the Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay areas and they include Maori and Pakeha British and Scandinavian, married women and single, educated and barely literate, well-to-do and poorly off – a wide and representative cross-section of the period that begins with Elizabeth Colenso (1821-1904) and goes on into the 20th century when the last of these petticoat pioneers reached life’s end.
Book is in good condition, hard cover with dust cover. Published in 1973 ISBN 0589997718
