Kaweka Rolled by Department of Conservation
ISBN: 9414264274120 PUBLISHER: Department of Conservation FORMAT: Rolled
PUBLICATION DATE: 1990
DESCRIPTION: Kaweka Forest Park encompasses approximately 67,000ha. The park includes most of the north-south orientated Kaweka Range which rises to 1724m. To the east is the Black Birch Range and Don Juan Peak while to the south the Mackintosh and Blowhard Plateaux. North-west of the main range is the rolling country of an old dissected peneplain which drains north-east into the Mohaka River and south-west into the Ngaruroro River. The north-western boundary of the park is the Oamaru River, which is a major tributary of the Mohaka River and forms the common boundary with Kaimanawa Forest Park to the west.
The Napier-Taihape Road provides access to southern areas of the park while a road via Puketitiri (some 56km west of Napier) provides access to Makahu Saddle or to Mangatutu Thermal Springs on the Mohaka river. A poled walking route through Poronui station to the north of the park also serves both Kaweka and Kaimanawa Forest Parks.
