This soft cover edition was released in 1988. Covering actions from the Maori tribal wars to Operation East Timor, and including both World Wars, this work is not a glorification of war.
It is instead a successful attempt to capture war's privations, squalor and horrors and to describe how ordinary New Zealanders have responded.
A key feature is its magnificent collection of black and white photographs.
Author Michael King was one of this country's leading historians and biographers. In 2006 he was named one of 100 most important New Zealanders that have ever lived.
He published more than 34 books in his lifetime.
