The history of badges is by no means a simple one: as regiments have amalgamated and changed their names, and as kings and queens have come and gone, a plethora of badges have been issued, many of which are difficult to date.

 This is further complicated by the variety of materials that have been used - including silver, brass, white metal and plastic - and collectors today need to keep their wits about them, for the quality and detail of fraudulent restrikes improves constantly.
